Traveling with Migraine

Over the past couple of years, I’ve had to become really good at navigating my migraines (although I haven’t perfected it. Don’t let me fool you). Unfortunately I am one of those unlucky souls who suffer from migraines at the drop of a hat. And if not managed well, they can be debilitating and ruin your day- or vacation!

Migraine, a debilitating neurological disorder, manifests in a variety of symptoms that can greatly disrupt the lives of those affected. Searing headaches, often felt on one side of the head, pulsate with intensity, causing extreme pain that can last for hours or even days. Accompanying this agony are other symptoms such as sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and blurred vision. It is estimated that around one billion people worldwide suffer from migraines, making it one of the most common neurological conditions globally. The impact of migraines reverberates through all demographics, affecting both men and women, although women are disproportionately affected. Furthermore, the symptoms can vary greatly from person to person, making the condition complex and difficult to treat effectively.

As time has gone on, I’ve found some things that help me be able to travel and not panic if I feel a migraine coming along.


The first thing that I’ve found that has been a lifesaver is a website called Cove. This is an online resource of migraine specialists that will listen to you, and find exactly the right treatment to help. I don’t know about any other sufferers out there, but I happen to fall in that bracket where my regular doctors don’t quite take me seriously, but won’t recommend that I see a neurologist because I’m not a “chronic” sufferer (just FYI, chronic typically means 15 or more migraines a month).

When I found Cove, it changed everything for me. The doctors listen, try different things, and I can happily say have found my perfect medication. Even better, they set you up on auto refills so that your prescription arrives at your door on schedule so you always have enough with you, to pack for your vacation.

Cove Migraine Help


Another helpful tool I’ve found is a small, portable, ice roller that you can easily pack in your bag. These rollers work so good when you use them over your sinuses, eyes, temples, and forehead. While they probably won’t get rid of your headache by themself, they sure do provide me with a lot of relief. I love that they can be easily thrown in a bag and then put into the fridge or freezer in your hotel room just in case you need it one evening.

These are also great just to roll under your eyes from time to time if you’d like!

Finally, you know you’ll be watching lots of movies or TV shows on your long flights or car travels and sometimes those screen lights just trigger my headaches.

I’ve found that Blue Light glasses can really ease that pain (they’re good to wear while working everyday in front of a computer as well). While they may not be an entire solution by themselves, I do feel the different in my eyes and head when I wear them. You can throw these in your carryon and put them on while you try and watch your movies and distract yourself while on those long travel journeys.
